The upper portion of the tube to the extent of about six feet was of glass. Floating on the top of the liquid, the inventor had introduced a small figure of a man which with the rising of the column in fair weather presented itself to view ; but with the approach of foul weather retreated out of sight. The aneroid barometer is made according to this plan. In its simplest form it is a metal box from which a large part of the air has been removed. The cover will bend slightly with changes of pressure of the atmosphere. By a series of levers the extent of movements of the cover of the box is multiplied and represented by a pointer on a dial.
